Things You Need for This Tutorial
The materials you will need for this tutorial depend on what tip or hack you will observe in removing scratches from your pair of plastic or glass lenses.
Some of the most common materials people use to clean scratched glasses include mild soap and baby shampoo. If you want to remove scratches, you can prepare alcohol, toothpaste, household glass cleaner, white vinegar, or baking soda.
Deep scratches may require professional-grade products, such as car wax, scratch repair kit, or a jewelry polishing and cleaning agent. My only comment about these materials is that they might damage the protective coating of the lenses.
Other materials you may need include a cotton ball and a microfiber cloth for applying the solution and cleaning the safety glasses’ lens.
Steps for Removing Scratches from Safety Glasses
Step 1. Clean your glasses in soapy water.
This life hack is one of the simplest you can ever do to remove scratches off glasses without making them worse. It is cheap and will not damage your spectacles’ coating, too.
Make a fifty-fifty solution of mild dish soap and cold water. Immerse your glasses for a few minutes before rubbing the scratches using a soft cloth. Rinse and wipe your glasses with a clean, lint free cloth.
It would be unwise to use this tip to remove deep scratches because it is only effective against light scratches.
Pro Tip: You can bump this hack a little by rubbing alcohol on the glasses. Alcohol dries quickly, so you must be quick to scrub the scratches.
Step 2. Use a non abrasive toothpaste and baking soda.
One of the most practical ways to remove scratches from safety glasses is using ordinary toothpaste and baking soda. It is effective in removing light scratches.
Apply pea-sized toothpaste on the scratches and cover it with baking soda. Rub the mixture methodically against the lenses in a circular motion. Use a clean cloth for this.
Continue rubbing the area until the scratches start to fade. Rinse your glasses and repeat the process if necessary. Pat them dry with a microfiber cloth.
Here is an exciting video post from Cleaning Solutions on how to remove scratches from safety glasses and lenses.
Pro Tip: Do not use gel toothpaste or any product with abrasive ingredients because they will only make the scratches worse.
Step 3. Rub the scratches with a glass cleaner and liquid dish soap solution.
Here is a solution anyone can perform to get scratches off their safety glasses. Pour an ordinary glass cleaner into a bowl and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Mix well and dip a soft cloth in the solution.
Gently rub the soft cloth on the scratches until they start fading away. Rinse and dry your glasses.
Step 4. Apply baking soda paste.
Place half a tablespoon of water into a small ball and add a tablespoon of baking soda. Mix the two ingredients until you get a thick paste, like toothpaste.
Apply a small amount of the paste over the scratches and gently rub using a cotton ball or soft cloth. I suggest working the compound in circular motions.
Rinse your safety glasses and check if there are still scratches. If so, you can repeat the process a few more times. Ensure to dry your safety goggles afterward using a soft cloth or microfiber towel.
Step 5. Remove scratches using baking soda and white vinegar.
If Step 4 failed to give you satisfactory results, you can amp it up a bit. Instead of mixing the baking soda with water, you will use white vinegar.
You can use the same ratio, mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with a half teaspoon of white vinegar. Mix to create a paste and apply it over the scratches.
Gently scrub the compound on the lens and watch the scratches disappear. Rinse and dry the safety glasses thoroughly.
Step 6. Apply a baby wash or a mild shampoo.
A baby wash or baby shampoo is a non abrasive solution to remove scratches from lenses, without removing the protective anti reflective or anti fog surface.
Pour warm water into a small bowl and add a few drops of the mild shampoo or baby wash. Dip a microfiber cloth into the soapy solution and carefully rub the scratches with it.
Rinse your glasses to see if there are no more scratch marks. If there are, you can repeat the process a few more times.
Step 7. Use automotive polish or wax.
If none of our tips to remove scratches have worked so far, you can observe more aggressive methods. The first one involves using car polish or wax.
I recommend this trick to remove scratches because not only is it effective. It can also create a layer of protection on the lenses.
Apply the wax on the scratches using the product’s applicator pad. If it does not have any, you can use a soft cotton cloth or wool.
Rub the lens surface gently until you do not see any marks. Rinse the glasses and dry them with a clean cloth.
I find the Carfidant Scratch and Swirl Remover effectively removes light scratches and swirl marks on my safety glasses. It may work for you, too. You can also search for similar materials from your favorite e-commerce site.
You might also want to check the comment section and the links for each product to determine if the polishing or waxing agent can treat scratched lenses.
Step 8. Use jewelry cleaner and polish.
You might think this solution is unusual, but some people find it effective in removing scratches from safety goggles.
Wash and dry your glasses before applying a small amount of the cleaner to the scratch marks. Rub the compound gently in a circular motion using the applicator pad. Buff it with a clean soft cloth.

Step 9. Consider a scratch repair kit.
Getting a scratch repair kit can be a costly solution. However, it is worth every dollar you spend because you will never worry about scratching your safety glasses again.
